Who We Are
Magan Charkha Unit – Magan Sangrahalaya Samiti
Magan Charkha comes to you with impeccable credentials rooted in Gandhian philosophy, rural empowerment, and sustainable development. Our journey is deeply connected to India’s constructive movement — a movement that sought not only political freedom but economic and social self-reliance for villages.

We believe that understanding the past is essential to shaping a meaningful future. Our foundation lies in values of simplicity, dignity of labor, decentralization, and community participation. These principles continue to guide our work in Organic Khadi, village industries, and rural entrepreneurship.
Our Gandhian Roots
In 1936, Mahatma Gandhi moved to Sevagram near Wardha and established his base there. After leaving Sabarmati Ashram, he settled in Maganwadi, Wardha. The Ashram was named after Maganlal Gandhi, his close associate and rural scientist, who dedicated his life to research and development of village industries.

Wardha soon became a centre of constructive work and rural transformation. Khadi, charkha, village industries, sanitation, education, and self-reliance became practical tools for national reconstruction.

Magan Charkha shares a symbiotic relationship with Magan Sangrahalaya Samiti’s rural enterprises and khadi initiatives, continuing Gandhiji’s constructive programmes for empowering villages and artisans.
The Vision of Dr Devendra Kumar
In 1949, Dr Devendra Kumar, a young oil technologist inspired by Gandhian ideals, joined the mission to empower rural communities through science and technology. He believed that appropriate technology — simple, affordable, and locally adaptable — could transform rural life.

In 1978, he established the Centre of Science for Villages (CSV) at Magan Sangrahalaya, Wardha. The goal was to bridge traditional knowledge with modern scientific innovation and create sustainable livelihood opportunities.

Dr Devendra Kumar’s work emphasized:
✓ Appropriate technology for rural households
✓ Low-cost housing and sanitation solutions
✓ Improved tools for artisans and farmers
✓ Non-violent honey extraction and eco-friendly innovations
✓ Integration of science with Gandhian economics

His approach ensured that technology served humanity — especially the poor and marginalized — rather than replacing traditional skills.
Continuing the Legacy
Today, Dr Vibha Gupta, Chairperson of Magan Sangrahalaya Samiti, continues this mission of sustainable rural livelihoods through technological and Gandhian interventions.

Under her leadership, the focus remains on:
✓ Women empowerment through Self Help Groups
✓ Organic farming and seed preservation
✓ Promotion of Organic Khadi
✓ Rural entrepreneurship development
✓ Sustainable and ethical production models

The mission is not only to preserve heritage but to make it economically viable and socially relevant in the modern world.
Our Philosophy
Magan Charkha is not merely about designing exquisite fabrics in khadi. It is about improving the well-being of rural communities across India. Organic Khadi represents a complete “Farm to Fabric” journey — ensuring no chemical inputs are used at any stage. From organic cotton cultivation to spinning, weaving, dyeing, and finishing, the process respects both people and the planet.

Why Organic Khadi Matters:
✓ No harmful chemicals in farming
✓ Safe and healthy working conditions
✓ Environmentally responsible production
✓ Improved income security for farmers and weavers
✓ Biodegradable and sustainable textile solutions

Each fabric carries the rhythm of human hands and the spirit of Gandhian values — self-reliance, dignity, and harmony with nature.
Our Commitment
✓ Promoting Organic Khadi and ethical textiles
✓ Empowering rural communities through livelihood generation
✓ Encouraging sustainable and decentralized economic development
✓ Integrating science with Gandhian philosophy
✓ Preserving traditional craftsmanship and artisan skills
✓ Supporting women-led rural enterprises
✓ Building environmentally responsible production systems

We believe that true development balances economic growth, social justice, and ecological sustainability. Magan Charkha stands as a living example of how tradition and innovation can work together for inclusive progress.
